Biennale 2018 – Giardini

The next day was dedicated to the gardens and we started at the small island of San Giorgio Maggiore, where Vatican commissioned some of the famous architectural names to present their vision of a chapel as a space for contemplation.
Not being a religious person and – to be honest – not bothered to check it out in advance, I haven’t expected much of it.
Therefore the impact they had on me, when I experienced the space – was even greater.
Each and every one of them represents the piece-of-art and it is truly impressive, how relatively simple forms manage to, through the sensible use of materials and volumes and light, they manage to create a serene, one could even say divine spaces, where one can almost physically feel connected with the universe as well as with one’s inner self.

Out of ten of them, I’d like to mention three at least.

Decisions, decisions…

Although, building a house is not exactly a rocket science, it is definitely not a walk to the park either.

The whole process takes decisions to be made.
And there are many. At a time it seems it is just an endless stream of them.
And they vary. A lot.

A client studying a detailed model of a part of the house that features vertical as well as horizontal commuting paths.

There are big ones on which projects succeeds or fails. And there are small, but definitely not less important, ones.

There are technology based and materials based and people based and…

And although one hires the specialists like an architect, engineers, project manager, contractors and other service providers…, to take care of things, one is not familiar with, not all – in fact not even close to all – decisions could not be all delegated.

During yesterday’s phone call, you mentioned having second thoughts about the ramp toward the kid’s room. It might have been that it was just a non-important remark from your side. Never the less, I have to admit it touched me. Thinking about it, kept me awake this night and I feel the need to share some thoughts about the topic.
